Freshman Tara Frantz led all players with 15 kills leading UT Arlington to a 15-25, 25-21, 25-14, 28-26 victory over Utah State on Friday evening at the USF Asics/Powerade Challenge at War Memorial in San Francisco.

The UT Arlington men's and women's cross country teams open the 2008 season on Saturday morning at the 31st Annual North Texas Invitational.

The UT Arlington men's golf team will open the season Sept. 29 at the St. Mary's Invitational in Pebble Beach, Calif.

UT Arlington will travel to San Francisco to compete in the USF Asics/Powerade Challenge this weekend at War Memorial Gym (5,300). The Mavericks will take on Utah State (0-4), San Francisco (1-2) and UC-Santa Barbara (1-1) with competition beginning on Friday at 4:30 p.m. against the Utah State Aggies.

UT Arlington's women captured second place to open the season; the Mavericks men place four in the Top 10 to earn the team victory.

Bianca Sauls and Tara Frantz combined for 23 kills, but it wasn't enough as the SMU Mustangs defeated UT Arlington 25-18, 25-21, 25-22, in its home opener on Wednesday night at Moody Coliseum.

Sauls was named All-Tournament team at the North Texas Mean Green Volleyball Classic in Denton last weekend. Sauls guided the Mavericks to a 2-1 record, finishing in second-place with match victories over Jackson State (3-0) and North Texas (3-2). In the tournament finale, Sauls recorded her first double-double of the season with 16 kills and 10 digs. Her 16 kills is the most by any UT Arlington player in a match this season. She led the Mavs during their opening weekend with 30 kills (2.5 kills/set), 16 digs, nine blocks and two service aces.
